Beijing Workers Stadium (工人体育场)
The new Beijing Workers Stadium is currently being rebuilt in time to host the AFC Asian Cup Final 2023. The vast arena is the home of the hugely popular home side, Beijing Guoan.
The previous stadium's nickname was 'Gongti' and there is no doubt that the name will continue with the new stadium. 'Gongti' was derived from an abbreviation of the venue's name in Chinese.
The previous incarnation of the 'Workers Stadium' has a long history. It was originally built in 1959 and came onto the global stage when it hosted the Asian Games in 1990 and football matches at the Beijing Olympic 2008 Games.
The new and modern 'Workers Stadium' is set to be completed in December, 2022.
The much famed running track in the previous stadium has been removed so fans will be closer to the pitch, literally 8.5 meters away from the action.
The stadium will also be upgraded to have four tiers and the roof will cover all the seats ensuring that football fans are constantly protected from the elements. The stadium will hold the opening and closing ceremonies of the Asian Cup 2023 as well as the grand final.
